I do not argue or try to persuade anyone as I have seen friendships broken and hard feelings caused about this issue among some of our brothers and sisters. I still study with the Salafi group because they are strong Muslims. I only claim to love Allah and follow the teaching of the Prophet. My husband does the same as I do. What is the difference between a Sunni Muslim and a Salafi Muslim, and should we make a distinction? It is obligatory Waajib upon every Muslim to follow the way methodology of our righteous predecessors like the Companions and their successors and other scholars and people of excellence in matters of Aqeedah creed and actions.
We think that both of the groups mentioned in the question are upon this way the way of the righteous predecessors. If the reality is one, then it is not important if the names differ. Our advice to our sister asking the question and others is to love each other as brothers and sisters for the Sake of Allaah and not let a door open for the devil to scatter our unity and make us busy in things other than what is best for our worldly life and our religion. The brothers and sisters should make an effort and be enthusiastic in calling respectively their brothers and sisters according to Islamic jurisdictions.
May Allaah bless this effort so that it would get its fruit and blessings by making people follow this true methodology. Allaah Knows best. So we learned that anyone who calls them self sunni but they do not get inspiration from Qur'an and sunnah upon authentic chains then they are not currect sunni, no matter whatever name they use for themselves, or whatever cap they wear or how much longer their beard is.
Same way if a brother uses for himself salafi but he doesn't take his deen from Qur'an and authentic sunnah upon the understanding of salaf pious predecessors and following three best generation with authentic chains in creed, good deeds and whatever thing they want to use for deen, they are not upon the correct path and not the true salafi.
That is the reason brother above answered saying salafi and sunni are the same thing, In sha Allaah. Keeping in mind that there is a sect in Pakistan and India they have sometimes hijacted the name 'sunni' and use the word 'sunni' for them but they are upon barewli thought and their imaam is ahmad raza khan barelwi.
So that thought is not the proper sunni, which brother in fatwa talked about above.. So when i say 'sunni and salafi' are same thing so i am talking about sunni the ahlus sunnah wal jamaa' and salafi the ahlus sunnah wal jamaah' or ahlul hadeeth or even athari can be used for same group of people. Using just different name but following the same idea means no difference at all. In sha Allaah, for better understanding, i will write the major points of ahlus sunnah wal jamaah, sunni or the ahlus sunnah wal jamaah, salafi.
This way, you would better understand them and their belief. They are upon the manhaj way of sahaba radhiAllahu anhum. So they follow the salaf pious previous generations in aqaaid creed and they stay away from what their brain grasp, kashaf something they thought came from Allaah on their heart , what their heart think to be true in any matter neither they go on dreams to be part of sharea rather their masdar always stay what is written with authentic isnaad in Qur'an and sunnah.
Rather, they follow only prophet Muhammad salAllaahu alayhe wa sallam in adaab and ikhlaaq and how the sahaba interpreted it coming with only authentic chains.
They do not invent new worships and nawaafil like many of people do sadly. Neither they follow their nafs desires and invent any of days nor they do singing like some people do on mazaar etc. They go on quboor graves pay the salam and then ask Allaah for the forgiveness of deceased. They don't do tabarruk, neither they call upon deceased auliyah and ask them for intercession, astaghfirullah its a shirk shirk fid-duaa - may Allaah save us from that, ameen.
Neither they touch the graves, nor they put any garment chadar on grave, nor they circumambulate the graves, nor they do zabeha on the name of deceased to make them happy. This is a faasid, baatil a'amal that some people do that but in sharea this is not at all allowed rather these things are haram and can take one to shirk. And other than ahlus sunnah wal jamaah, Sunni, Salafi all other sects belief in some of sifaat attributes of Allaah and deny some of the sifaat of Allaah azza wa jallah.

May Allaah protect us from misunderstanding, aameen. The Imaan increases with good deeds and decreases with bad deeds. Sunni, Salafi both do not think that with out actions the imaan can stay there in a person like it is belief of mujria. The Sunni, Salafi also belief that doing bad deeds out of ignorance and whims and desires and kabaair major sins does not make a person of ahl-e-qiblah go out of fold of al-islam rather this is the belief of khawaarij.

And both the Sunni, Salafi love mo'mineen for the sake of Allaah alone and help them according to whatever they can. Ahlus sunnah wal jamaah, Sunni, Salafi love all the sahaba-e-karaam radhiAllaahu anhum ajmaeen. They belief all the sahaba are aadil just and thiqqah reliable. They belief to love all the sahaba, and aal-e-bayt family and houshold of prophet salAllahu alayhe wa sallam and the azwaaj mutaharaat umhaat al-momineen, all of them including sayyadah ayesha radhiAllahu anha and they belief this love give them sunni, salafi reward, in the eyes of Allaah, In sha Allaah. And whoever hate the sahaba or some of them, or cruse them sahaba or have grudge on them in heart in hidden way or by actions then the sunni, salafi hate such people.
However, Sunni and salafi does not do ghuluw in the maraatib of ashaba-e-karaam and do not consider them sahaba as ma'soom. If someone consider them sahaba as ma'soom then the sunni, salafi have bar'aat stay away, deny their position from such people. Keeping in mind that bara'ah deny, staying away from a position from someone does not mean that da'wah propagation to them wouldn't be given, based on Qur'an and sunnah.
So we would continue to give da'wah to kuffaar non-Muslims , mulhideen atheist, astray , mushrikeen polytheists , murtaddeen apostate and other than these misguided sects. They consider the statements of sahaba companions , tabeon the companions of companions and atba at-tabaeon their companions more reliable in this regard.
